Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.

- 1 Peter 4:10

Last Thanksgiving, our family embarked on an unforgettable journey to Thailand for an international volunteer trip with Globe Aware. We were joined by three other families, making us a group of 15 adventurers, eager to serve and experience God’s beautiful creation in a new corner of the world.

After 35 hours of travel, we arrived in Bangkok. Exhausted yet excited, we took in the splendor of the Grand Palace before retreating to our hotel for a much-needed nap. That evening, we caught a flight to Chiang Mai, ready to dive into the adventure awaiting us.

The next morning, we rose early for a sunrise tour at Doi Inthanon. Though the clouds hid the sunrise, the breathtaking views made the effort worthwhile. We hiked to a mountain village, explored Thailand's highest point, and indulged in delicious, authentic Thai food. The beauty and richness of the culture reminded us of God's creativity and care in every detail of His creation.

Our week of volunteering began in the hills of Chiang Dao, where Globe Aware partners with hill tribe communities. Upon arrival, we toured the campus, meeting the children and coordinators and learning about their work. The gardens, community center, and dormitories revealed a place filled with hope and opportunity.

Each day, we served as a family in unique and meaningful ways. The guys built a chicken coop while the rest of us taught English, painted a school wall, and played with local children. Watching our kids laugh and bond with the Thai children, whether playing soccer or jump rope, was a highlight of the trip.

On Tuesday, we mixed feed for pigs at the Leadership Home, a labor-intensive but rewarding task. Later, we visited local hot springs and a nearby stream, marveling at the natural beauty around us. Midweek, we ventured into the Chiang Dao Cave, explored limestone waterfalls, and even helped thresh rice in the paddy fields. Each activity, whether serving or sightseeing, deepened our appreciation for the people and culture of Thailand.

Thursday evening brought a heartfelt farewell party at the Leadership Home. The children performed traditional dances, and we all enjoyed a lively dance party together. Sharing dinner, ice cream, and gratitude with these sweet children reminded us of the joy and connection that service can bring.

Before leaving northern Thailand, we visited an elephant sanctuary. Feeding bananas to these gentle giants and bathing them was an unforgettable experience for our entire family. Later, we attended a local church celebration, worshiping alongside new friends in a beautiful expression of God's global family.

On our final days, we relaxed in Phuket and enjoyed a sunrise tour of the Phi Phi Islands. Snorkeling, swimming, and spotting baby sharks in the clear waters of Maya Bay was a delightful way to end our journey.

Why Serve as a Family?

This trip was more than an adventure. It was an opportunity to work together as a family, glorifying God and stewarding His blessings in gratitude. Dr. Kara E. Powell and Dr. Chap Clark explain it well in their book Sticky Faith:

“Family projects and service opportunities, even if just for a few hours, give families common experiences and common memories. Families can serve together any number of ways, from packing lunches for the homeless to going on mission trips together.”

Serving alongside our children not only strengthened our family bond but also gave our kids the chance to see how God is at work in the lives of others. By engaging with those in need, they began to understand what Jesus meant when He said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

As Powell and Clark share:

“The more our children can come alongside those who are poor, broken, or weak, the more they will recognize how much the ‘least of these’ have to teach those of us who think we are rich, whole, and strong. Over time, community builds compassion.”

What We Gained

Family international volunteer trips like this one are about more than giving; they are about learning, growing, and pointing others to Christ. Whether building a chicken coop, teaching English, or simply sharing meals, every moment is an opportunity to reflect God’s love.

We were also reminded of the immense privilege it is to travel and serve. Most people in the world don’t have such opportunities, and it’s our responsibility to use these blessings to glorify God and further His kingdom.

If you’ve ever considered an international volunteer trip as a family, we encourage you to take the leap. Serving together is one of the most meaningful ways to bond, learn, and experience the joy of giving.

As we reflect on our time in Thailand, we’re grateful for the memories we created, the people we met, and the ways God worked in and through us. It was a Thanksgiving we’ll never forget—and one that pointed our family toward Christ in a deeper way.
